bbc.co.uk – Social networking giant Facebook said its new messaging service now has more than 500 million users worldwide. Users of the separate Messenger app have more than doubled from 200 million in April, the company said. Facebook had faced a backlash after it announced it would be forcing users to download the app to send private messages to friends over the main Facebook service. Users started being pushed to download the app – launched in 2011 – in July. Read more>>
bbc.co.uk – Twitter has announced they have made it ‘easier’ for users to tweet, by developing a new layout. For everyone using Twitter on their mobile, there isn’t any difference, but desktop users will notice that the box they type their 140 characters in has moved. Instead of being on the left-hand side of the screen, it’s now directly above the timeline. There’s no word yet from Twitter on the reasoning behind this change. Read more>>

bbc.co.uk – Regulators have approved a long-awaited plan to connect the Hong Kong and Shanghai stock exchanges. The Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect will allow investors to trade across the border for the first time and is set to begin on 17 November. It means global investors will now have access to Chinese stocks from Hong Kong, potentially resulting in $3.8bn (£2.3bn) worth of trades a day. The tie up is seen as a key milestone in the capital market liberalisation of China – the world’s second largest economy – where authorities keep a strong grip on the yuan currency. Read More>>
bbc.co.uk – Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has reported a 15% rise in quarterly profits in its first set of results since it listed its shares in New York. Net income in July-to-September rose to $1.1bn (£687m). Alibaba, founded in 1999 by Jack Ma, floated in New York in September, breaking records by raising $25bn. The shares have traded around 45% above the listing price in expectation that the firm’s rapid growth will continue. The shares rose 4.2%. After taking account of certain one-off costs in the quarter, net income fell by 39%. Read more>>
