bbc.co.uk – The creative industries and government have pledged cash to fill a skills gap and train ‘work ready’ games designers, animators and visual effects artists. The Next Gen Skills Academy will provide cutting edge training in a sector worth at least £71bn a year to the UK economy. Ed Vaizey, Minister for Culture and the Digital Economy, made the announcement at the EGX games show at Earls Court. He described the creative sector as a powerhouse within the UK economy, but said employers often found it hard to recruit staff who were up-to-speed with the latest technologies. Read more>>

And with two-thirds of UK residents now using a smartphone, what is the smartest way to get the best deal on a new mobile? They all launch their latest models with huge fanfare and glitzy advertising. bbc.co.uk – The European Commission and Canada have unveiled the details of a new trade liberalisation agreement. Under the deal almost all customs tariffs will be eliminated and markets for services will be opened up. But the agreement still needs approval from the EU parliament and faces particular opposition from Germany. Critics say the deal restricts the power of democratic governments in relation to big business. Read More>>
bbc.co.uk – The president of the Spanish region of Catalonia has signed a decree calling for a referendum on independence. Artur Mas wants Catalonia to hold a Scottish-style vote on 9 November, but does not have the backing of the central government in Madrid. Spain quickly denounced the move, calling the plan unconstitutional. Catalonia, which includes Barcelona, is one of Spain’s richest and most highly industrialised regions, and also one of the most independent-minded. Read more>>
