bbc.co.uk – Apple has unveiled a smartwatch – the Apple Watch – its first new product line since the first iPad and the death of its co-founder Steve Jobs. The device runs apps, acts as a health and fitness tracker and communicates with the iPhone. While rival smartwatches already exist, experts said Apple had a history of entering sectors relatively late and then changing their direction. Apple also unveiled two new handsets that are larger than previous models. Read more>>
bbc.co.uk – An influential group of major technology firms is calling on the UK to appoint “digital ministers” in every government department. TechUK – which represents more than 850 companies – also demanded rules to allow more skilled technology workers into the country. “You’ve got to make sure the UK becomes a hub for digital skills,” said TechUK chief executive Julian David. bbc.co.uk – The US government has imposed new sanctions on major Russian banks, defence and energy companies. The measures are part of a joint effort with the European Union aimed at punishing Russia for what they say is its military intervention in Ukraine. They come despite a fragile ceasefire holding in the east of the country. The Russian foreign ministry denounced the new sanctions as “another hostile step in line with the confrontational course” taken by the US . “Of course, our retaliatory measures will not keep you waiting,” it said. bbc.co.uk – Italy’s Prime Minister has said that Europe’s third largest economy will see growth of only “around zero” this year. Matteo Renzi’s forecast is lower than the government’s previous prediction and comes as the economy tackles its third recession in a decade. “I am not optimistic,” Mr Renzi said in a pre-recorded interview to be aired later on Tuesday. It is the first time he has put a figure on likely growth. Lacklustre growth will do little to help the eurozone’s own economic woes. Read more>>
