At the end of October 2012, around one in seven British shops were left vacant.  With high rents and rising rates, people running smaller retail firms could be forgiven for thinking that the future looks very bleak indeed. Not so –  e-commerce provides a valuable opportunity for retailers to boost sales and drive customers into their shops. Read more>>

as-coa.org – With a growing number of broadband networks and increasing mobile connectivity, Latin America has seen a boom in internet usage. There are an estimated 255 million internet users in Latin America and the Caribbean, representing around 43 percent of the region’s population. Argentina leads the region in terms of internet penetration at 68 percent, according to a 2012 Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers study. Chile, Uruguay, and Colombia follow with the highest penetration rates in Latin America, with more than 50 percent having online access. Read more>>

guardian.co.uk – SMEs may think that exporting requires physically setting up overseas, but the e-commerce opportunities are vast.  An increasing number of small businesses are turning to the internet and their e-commerce websites to sell their products overseas, bypassing traditional and expensive routes to export.  Website Freelancer.co.uk analysed 2,200 small businesses in the UK and found a 42% increase in the number selling their products online and a 36% rise in the number of small businesses selling their products overseas via their e-commerce sites. The survey also found that a large number of startups in the last year began trading exclusively online, with a 32% increase on the year before. Read more>>
