bbc.co.uk – Yahoo has agreed a deal to buy New York-based blogging service Tumblr for $1.1bn (£723m; 857m euros) in cash. Yahoo’s chief executive Marissa Mayer said that as part of its promise “not to screw it up”, Tumblr would operate independently. David Karp, will continue as chief executive officer of Tumblr. The deal is the largest made by Ms Mayer since she took the helm at Yahoo last July, and she described the acquisition as a “unique opportunity.” Read more>>
bbc.co.uk – Some Marks and Spencer customers have told the BBC of cases where the chain’s contactless payment terminals have taken money from cards other than the ones intended for payment. Card are supposed to be within about 4cm of the front of the contactless terminal to work. But some customers say payments have been taken from cards while in purses and wallets at much greater distances. M&S said its systems had been extensively tested and were robust. Read more>>
bbc.co.uk – A company made up of former Nokia employees has shown off Jolla, a new smartphone with a custom operating system known as Sailfish. The software has been built from the remnants of MeeGo, a project abandoned by Nokia in 2011 in favour of adopting Windows Phone for its handsets. The Jolla phone – pronounced Yol-la – is due to be released by the end of the year, and will only be sold online. It will enter a market already heavily crowded with several operating systems. bbc.co.uk – Those calling for the UK to leave the EU are “putting politics before economics”, business leaders have said. In a letter to the Independent, figures from BT, Shell, Lloyds Banking Group and Deloitte, estimated membership was worth up to £92bn a year to Britain. But the 19 signatories accepted reforms were needed and urged David Cameron to protect the City from EU ideas which they said put its standing at risk. The move comes amid splits within the Conservative Party over Europe. Read more>>
