languageadvantage.com – Did you know that the 9th May is Europe Day and that this date is celebrated in Europe every year? But, what is Europe Day? On the 9th May 1950, what is now known as the European Union, was first proposed. In Paris, the French Foreign Minister of the time, Robert Schuman, put forward the idea for France, Germany and other European countries to work together to put their coal and steel production  as a  foundation of a possible European federation. INTERNATIONAL DIGITAL NEWS

bbc.co.uk – YouTube has launched a trial scheme for paid channels on its website. Under the pilot programme, a small number of content makers will offer the channels for subscriptions starting at $0.99 (£0.64) a month. Each channel will offer a free 14-day trial and many will have discounted annual rates. YouTube, which is owned by Google, said the launch was part of an effort to enable “content creators to earn revenue for their creativity”. Read more>>

bbc.co.uk – Researchers at Cambridge University have developed an app that tries to track happiness by combining smartphone data with users’ perception of mood. EmotionSense collects information about where users are, how noisy the environment is and whom they are communicating with. It then combines this data with the user’s own report about mood. The app is part of a project to see how mobile phones can be used to improve health and wellbeing. Read more>>

bbc.co.uk – Microsoft has announced it will offer a preview version of its first major update to Windows 8 next month. The news comes amid growing criticism of the software’s user interface. Microsoft said the revision to the operating system (OS), codenamed Windows Blue, would be released at Biuld, a three-day developers event in San Francisco starting on 26 June 2013. However, while the company said it had listened to “feedback”, it has still not disclosed what changes are planned. Read more>>

bbc.co.uk – Amazon has become the first Western technology firm to offer paid-for Android apps in China – beating Google to the lucrative market. Google’s Chinese store for its mobile operating system – the most popular globally – only offers free apps. Amazon’s move paves the way for it to launch its Kindle e-reader devices in the country, analysts predict. Other locally-based services already offer paid apps to China which is the world’s largest mobile phone market. Read more>>

bbc.co.uk – Internet giant Google has changed the tagline on the homepage of its Palestinian edition from “Palestinian Territories” to “Palestine”. The change, introduced on 1 May, means google.ps now displays “Palestine” in Arabic and English under Google’s logo. Using the word Palestine is controversial for some. Israeli policy is that the borders of a Palestinian state are yet to be agreed. In November, the UN gave Palestine the status of “non-member observer state”. Read more>>
