bbc.co.uk – A government block on more than 30 high-profile websites has caused anger across India. India’s Department of Telecoms ordered the blocking of the sites in order to prevent the publicising of ‘jihadi activities’. After considerable pressure, four of the sites – Weebly, Vimeo, Daily Motion and Github – were unblocked. Read more>>

bbc.co.uk – Easy access to Google’s email service Gmail is now blocked in China, according to reports. Using Gmail directly via Google’s site has been impossible in the country for some time, but locals had still been able to use third-party apps, such as Microsoft Outlook, to use the service. Read more>>

bbc.co.uk – French President Francois Hollande says he wants Western sanctions on Russia to be lifted if progress is made in talks on the Ukraine conflict this month. He did not specify which sanctions – imposed by the EU, US and Canada – could be lifted. Read more>>

bbc.co.uk – The new year means a new currency for Lithuania – it is joining the euro, following its Baltic neighbours Estonia and Latvia into the currency bloc. Some Lithuanians fear price rises, but opinion polls point to growing optimism towards the euro. Read more>>
