Without doubt, the digital world is changing before our eyes. The internet has been the biggest leap forward for many generations, and digital technology has changed how customers behave and the way that the world does business. Even very traditional businesses have been forced to adapt their models, such as doctors and lawyers starting to offer consultations over Skype/Zoom or manufacturing companies that are staffed by robots. To really prosper in this digital age, you need to reach out and sell to customers all around the world.
You now have a vast scale of potential customers to access as a business in the digital age. Everything is going up, from the number of people in the world to the number of people and businesses online. Whether you sell directly to consumers or to other businesses, prepare yourself for a growth spurt.
Internet Explosion = Opportunity Explosion
Well over half of the world’s population is now connected to the internet. The growth in internet users is fast. There has been a huge surge since 2004, when internet users reached 1 billion for the first time. This rose to 2 billion in 2009, 3 billion in 2014 and 4 billion by the very end of 2017. It is due to tip to over 5 billion in 2022.
Scratch below the surface and you will see that your opportunity comes from a number of disruptions that companies all around the world are now waking up to:
- The world population is growing fast
- Over half the world is now online
- More purchases are made online
- Customers use their own languages online
- Customers spend more time online on mobile
- Millions of businesses exist in every corner of the world
- The shift online is from West to East
- New technology platforms are springing up.
